1 in 5 Texans live with a mental health condition. Seeking treatment for anxiety or depression does not disqualify you from life insurance — and for most, it doesn't even affect your rate.
Illustrative. Actual rates vary by carrier and full health profile. Not medical or legal advice.
Yes — the majority of people with anxiety or depression can qualify for life insurance. Mild to moderate anxiety or depression that is treated and well-managed often qualifies at standard rates. The underwriting focus is on stability: how long you've been in treatment, whether symptoms are controlled, medication adherence, and any recent hospitalization or episodes.
The most challenging factors are: inpatient psychiatric hospitalization within the last 2–5 years, multiple treatment-resistant episodes, recent suicide attempt (this is the most serious flag — many carriers decline within 5–10 years of an attempt), active severe symptoms despite treatment, or history of bipolar I disorder. None of these automatically eliminate all options, but they limit which carriers and products are available.
When you apply for life insurance with a medical exam, carriers request access to your medical records (MIB report) and pharmacy records. These will reflect prescriptions like SSRIs, SNRIs, or benzodiazepines, as well as physician notes. Disclosure is required and expected. Failure to disclose can lead to claim denial. The good news: disclosing managed, treated anxiety/depression is not disqualifying for most carriers.
Not on its own. A prescription for an SSRI or SNRI is underwritten in context — alongside your diagnosis, dosage history, clinical stability, and overall health picture. Many underwriters view a prescription and regular care as a positive sign: you're actively managing your mental health. The combination of prescription plus clinical stability often results in standard rates.
Anxiety disorders (GAD, social anxiety, panic disorder) are generally viewed slightly more favorably than major depressive disorder or bipolar conditions, all else being equal. However, both are evaluated on severity and management. Mild, well-controlled anxiety treated with low-dose medication typically qualifies at preferred to standard rates. Moderate, recurring depression may result in standard to slightly rated coverage.
Yes. Simplified issue and guaranteed issue policies are available and don't require medical exams. Simplified issue policies ask a few health questions but typically don't dig into mental health records. Guaranteed issue policies accept anyone regardless of health. These are solid options if standard coverage isn't available, or if you prefer privacy. Tower Hill can identify which product fits your situation.
